LAURIE PACE

Laurie and Stephen Pace currently homeschool their three children ages 12, 10, and 7.  Laurie holds degrees in Choral Music Education from East Central Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. Laurie taught choral music to her favorite age group (middle school) for 4 years before the Lord blessed her family with children.  Laurie currently leads various homeschool choirs and is trying to develop a network of choirs across the state in the hopes of creating opportunities for homeschoolers to participate in choral festivals and clinics throughout their middle and high school years.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

Our earliest learning begins with nursery rhymes.  This piece combines the familiar tune “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” with a new partner song that contains rhythmic challenges and tools for developing dynamics

SESSION 1:  “Little Firefly”

Discovering Harmony with Partner Songs

SESSION 2: “Can You Hear Me?”

Cultivating Compassion Through Music

Beauty can be seen and heard in all of God’s creation, including people.  This piece, beautifully written, views life from the perspective of someone who is deaf.  Do our children recognize the needs of others and the role they can play in reaching out?  This song helps us to walk in someone else’s shoes and to realize the opportunity we have to be a blessing to those around us.

SESSION 3: “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?”

Simple Lessons from American Spirituals

Anyone who’s ever sung a spiritual knows how much fun they are!  The spiritual originated as a uniquely American art form but is now sung all over the world.  This piece gives us the opportunity to remember what it means to dare to be a Daniel, to make an impact on the culture around us, in a really fun musical setting!

Each session will be active and will devote time applying new concepts of listening, note reading, and solfege to the selected pieces.  The dress rehearsal will be devoted to preparing to perform for our parents on the lawn at movie night.

SESSION 4:  DRESS REHEARSAL

LESLIE BURGER

This track is offered by Dr. Leslie Burger, Assistant Extension Professor in the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University.  A former home-educator, Leslie has been the wife of Dr. Wes Burger for the past 32 years and is the mother to three homeschool graduates, Justin (27), Wesley (25) and Ryan (23).   After working at the Missouri Department of Conservation for 5 years, Leslie “retired” to stay home with her babies and homeschool her children. She returned to work in 2008, started a doctoral program in 2010, and graduated in 2014 with a PhD in conservation education.  As a former homeschool mom, Leslie understands the unique position of home-educators and has designed a workshop sensitive to the needs of parents and children.
