Mississippi Home Educators Association applauds each of you for making the commitment to teach your children in a loving, nurturing environment. Mississippi homeschoolers enjoy some of the least restrictive laws in our nation. We should not take this for granted.
Being keenly aware of these precious rights we enjoy and knowing that these laws could change in any legislative session, MHEA has organized Homeschool Capitol Day on Thursday, February 28th, at the State Capitol Building. Our legislature will be in session, and each of you are encouraged to visit briefly with your representative or senator to express your support for them and to ask for their support of your right to homeschool.
Please contact your representative or senator in advance to let them know you would like to meet them. You can locate their office by calling the capitol switchboard at 601-359-3770.
First impressions are important, so appropriate dress is encouraged.
We would suggest:
1. Understand that parking at the capitol is limited, but area churches offer their lots at no charge. Visit with your fellow homeschoolers in the first floor rotunda beginning at 12:00 p.m. and with lawmakers as they return from lunch.
2. Plan to take a guided tour of the capitol building and visit the chamber galleries beginning at 1:00 p.m. These tours will be led by Teenpact alumni and will form in the first floor rotunda. We also have a choir from the Starkville group scheduled to perform on the second floor rotunda at noon.
MHEA will have an information table set up in the first floor lobby of the capitol from 11:30 – 4:30 p.m. This space will be a welcoming point for you. We can assist in finding your lawmakers’ offices, give general directions in the building, and help you make the most of this valuable time.
We want each of you to understand how important it is for this event to be successful. We have the opportunity to impact the future of homeschooling for years to come … in one single day.
Our primary goal is to build relationships with our legislators and to express to our lawmakers that we care deeply about home education and the precious freedoms we enjoy.
There will be no formal registration for this day, but opportunities are available to staff the information table. Please respond via email to email@example.com if you would like to help.
We ask you to prayerfully consider the rights we enjoy and take a stand to protect them by joining us for Homeschool Capitol Day. We look forward to seeing you on February 28th.
